Annotation:	The emphasis in this text is on presenting a brief description of the more well-known and recent crime prevention approaches and then presenting the results of evaluations that have been performed on each technique.

Abstract:	The book is broad in its scope and only looks at a fraction of the many programs and approaches which have been tried. Those included reflect the growing interest in crime prevention as a research and publication topic. The introductory chapter discusses the problem of crime in society in terms of crime measurement and fear of crime. Section one addresses primary crime prevention approaches, and the emphasis is on efforts to deal with the physical and social environment that fosters deviance. Specific consideration is given to neighborhood crime prevention, crime prevention and displacement, the mass media and crime prevention, and general deterrence. Section two deals with secondary prevention and attempts to bring about crime prevention through work with identified persons and situations at high risk of fostering deviant activity. Particular attention is paid to crime and delinquency prediction, drugs and crime, and crime prevention in schools. The final section investigates tertiary crime prevention methods including deterrence and incapacitation, electronic monitoring and home confinement, and rehabilitation.
