German police leadership faces numerous challenges in the future: the unification of Western Europe; the disintegration of Eastern Europe; international asylum seekers; growing ethnic diversity in the population; and increased population density. Several articles emphasize the need for a cooperative style of leadership to meet these challenges. While one article analyzes the ethical principles underlying such a leadership style, another article stresses the link between mutual trust and leadership in the police force. A third article explores the discrepancy between police leaders who consider their leadership style as cooperative and their employees who criticize the same style as authoritarian. The last article dealing with cooperative leadership introduces the concept of quality circles as a way to increase staff involvement. In view of future recruitment needs, one article presents the results of a survey exploring job satisfaction and motivation of 400 officers. The final articles emphasize the need for leadership training and for an accurate assessment of future leadership requirements.
