The first section provides a general survey of suspects who were sentenced in both West Germany and in the 11 West German Laender or States in 1988. Sections 2 and 3 focus on specific characteristics of those sentenced and on the type of sentence they received. Section 4 presents statistics on juvenile sentencing while section 5 focuses on alternative and/or additional sentences such as the loss of the drivers license and the loss of civil rights. The remaining sections provide statistics on convicts who had received detention pending trial, convicts with previous convictions, German and foreign convicts, and convicts who committed crimes against children; a detailed list of offense types which were prosecuted in 1988 is appended. The collection does not include information on victims, relations between offenders and victims, and damages. The sentencing statistics of 1988 are based on the results of the 1987 census and, therefore, not comparable to 1987 sentencing statistics. However, a chart, which adjusts the 1987 figures for the census effect, is appended.
