While the introductory article discusses the drug problem in Belgian prisons in general terms, the remaining articles focus on specific prisons (e.g., the drug situation at the Lantin prison) or programs. The Brussels based I.T.I. program educates incarcerated addicts on the dangers of drugs. An innovative program at the Nancy prison, involving drug addiction, alcoholism, and AIDS, strives to overcome the isolation of the prison setting by inviting speakers from the outside world. "In-dependances," a group of social work professionals at the Lanton prison, meet regularly to discuss methods of overcoming prison drug abuse and to coordinate the efforts of prison personnel with those of professionals from outside the prison. In close connection with the previous article, a member of "In-dependances" describes her experiences with three addicted inmates. The articles emphasize the differences between the reality of prison life and society's perceptions of prison life and the changes in professional approaches to drug abuse in prisons.
