Title: Maternity Rights for Policewomen Within the E.C.
Journal: Police Journal  Volume:65  Issue:1  Dated:(January-March 1992)  Pages:21-25
Author(s): E Dene
Date Published: 1992
Annotation: In recent years, there has been a substantial increase in the number of women police officers within the countries of the European Community (EC). Although these women have the same powers and authority as their male counterparts, the percentage of premature resignations from the police remains higher among female than male officers; one reason for this is the lack of adequate maternal benefits for policewomen.
Abstract: For women police officers, the conflict between family and career starts from conception as police work is far from ideal for expectant mothers. Entitlements to maternity leave vary throughout the EC; this article reviews benefits provided in Italy, Greece, Portugal, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, France, Eire, and Spain. The entitlements may include paid and unpaid leave, flexible hours, and paternal leave. 5 references (Author Abstract Modified)
