The collection publishes essays on the three major phases of crisis management: prevention and risk assessment, crisis situations, and the aftermath of disasters.
Abstract
The first section evaluates risk factors for disasters in France including natural risks, high technology risks, and nuclear risks. It also evaluates the success of a campaign informing the French population about major technological risks. The second section analyzes the management of specific crisis situations such as industrial disasters, forest fires, and major oil spills. One article analyzes the health effects of crises and the steps to minimize the impact. The final section deals with the aftermath of a disaster such as victim compensation and the reconstruction of the area. It includes specific examples (such as Hurricane Hugo's effect on Guadeloupe and the disaster at the Feyzin refinery) and general analyses on what can be learned from past disasters and whether crises can become instigators of social change. Nearly all articles include bibliographies.
