This report details the characteristics of persons admitted to and released from the prison and parole systems in the United States in 1987, using the data gathered from the 1987 National Corrections Reporting Program.
Abstract

Thirty-five States, the District of Columbia, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons contributed the offender-specific data presented in the report. The data cover admissions to State and Federal prison by sex, race, and other characteristics; offenses and sentence length by race and sex; methods of release; and time served. Other data focus on characteristics of parolees, successful and unsuccessful discharges from parole, time under correctional supervision, and other factors. Figures and tables
