The data came from 35 States, the District of Columbia, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. These jurisdictions and the California Youth Authority reported 307,562 admissions which accounted for about four-fifths of all admissions to State prisons in that year. In addition, Federal prisons reported admitting 25,084 persons. Releases during the same year totaled 265,737 for States and 27,711 for the Federal system. Data tables and discussions regarding offender characteristics, offense characteristics, and parole discharges and outcomes are included.
