Data for the directory were collected through a mail survey of researchers between June and September 1990. The broad working definition of "research" used for the purposes of this directory is "the results of systematic investigation attached to academic, policy-oriented law reform or judicial inquiry and available to the public through research reports and other publications." Part I contains the main list of researchers, organized alphabetically, and includes information on organizational affiliation, professional background, areas of research interest, and current research. At the end of the list of researchers is a small list of organizations which contains the same type of information as for the list of researchers; an organizational listing is used when the names of individuals involved in projects could not be supplied by the contributor. The index for Part I lists areas of research interest by subject, cross-referenced alphabetically by name of researcher. Part II lists each current research project and includes a research abstract and a list of related publications. Each entry in Part II has an identification number and is listed in numerical order.
