The first section reviews the contributions of HBCU academicians and administrators to Federal research efforts and includes original manuscripts describing on-going drug abuse research projects. The chapters in this section deal specifically with the history of HBCUs; historical perspectives on African-American drug abuse; substance abuse among black college students; the prevalence and correlates of alcohol and other drug use among young, homeless, black adults; dilemmas of drug-AIDS research among the black population; and an analysis of a drug survey at an HBCU. The second section consists of two papers on the barriers and opportunities involved with HBCU involvement in Federal research. The authors analyze Federal attempts to eliminate barriers to research careers and the possibility of enhanced biomedical and behavioral research opportunities for HBCUs.
