The member States of the Council of Europe approved a convention to prosecute offenses relating to cultural property, generally defined as products of archaeological exploration and excavation and other items of artistic, national heritage, or antique value.
Abstract
The parties agree to take appropriate measures to enhance public awareness of the need to protect cultural property. They will cooperate in matters of restitution of cultural property found on their territory which has been removed from the territory of another party to the convention. Each party will take necessary measures for adequate sanctioning of cultural property offenses and will establish its competence to prosecute any relevant offense. The convention, open for signature by all the member States of the Council of Europe, is subject to national ratification, acceptance, or approval. 3 appendixes
