The North Dakota Attorney General's Task Force on Family Violence developed policy guidelines for an interagency response to domestic violence.
Abstract
The goals of the police policy are to reduce family homicides, family assaults, police call-backs, liability risks for police, and injuries to officers. Effective domestic violence crime prevention requires a team effort involving dispatchers, police officers, and investigators. In both arrest and non-arrest situations, the officers will do all they can to help the victim, offender, and children. Supervisors must motivate, train, and direct personnel to perform their jobs in a compassionate and professional manner. Components of model policy guidelines for an interagency response to family violence include a judge's protocol, crisis intervention policy for advocates intervening in domestic violence cases, victim services protocol, treatment policy for mental health professionals, a parole and probation policy, and a protocol for law enforcement response when children are present.
