Divisions of the department are Commissioner's Staff, Administrative Services, Adult Institutions, and Community Services. The Commissioner's Staff oversees legal services, planning and research, internal audit, internal affairs, and employee grievance. The compliance section is responsible for adherence to court evaluations, coordination of accreditation activities, and field service programs. Administrative service details the department's operating budget, and adult Institutions is responsible for assessing inmate needs. Education and substance abuse programs are within this division in addition to health and food services. A description of facilities according to east, middle, and west Tennessee region is provided. Under Community Services, the field service section supervises persons on probation and screens participants for a boot camp program. The community corrections section oversees the grant for community corrections services which serves as an alternative to incarceration.
