This is a progress report on the implementation of a training and technical assistance plan for the TeamSpirit Program; a substance abuse prevention program for high school youth.
Abstract
The program is designed to empower teenagers to take an active role in the prevention of drug and alcohol use and associated impaired driving by their peers. In TeamSpirit, youth create and institute projects they believe will counter drug use in their communities. The program has two distinct phases: the leadership training conference and the program-activities phase. This report provides a sample guidelines for participating school and community groups as well as eligibility criteria for adult advisors, youth participants, and team leaders. Instructions are also provided on how a community can start its own TeamSpirit Program. The report on technical assistance provided encompasses information on funding sources, drunk driving statistics, assistance in the selection of nationally known speakers, assistance in adapting the curriculum to local needs, the solicitation of prevention materials, and the provision of additional materials for workshops. Progress is described for three sites, and recommendations are offered for additional and improved technical assistance.
