As of December 31, 1991, there were 77,120 California felons on parole, an increase of 11, 700 parolees since December 31, 1990. The parole population was 90.5 percent male and 9.5 percent female. The largest group of felons on parole were originally committed for controlled substance possession (13.7 percent of the population). The next largest group was committed for controlled substance possession for sale (9.3 percent of the population). Those committed for robbery accounted for 9.1 percent of the parole population.
