To promote victims' rights and develop public outreach plans, victims and victim advocates must understand the role of the media and learn pragmatic skills to work with the media.
Abstract
This guide lists all types of news mediums including print, television, and radio station formats. Other outreach opportunities for media coverage include billboards, circulars, and monthly billing statements. There are many resources in the community, such as public relations firms and commercial art schools, that will help and advise victims' rights organizations. Steps to develop a public relations program include drafting a "master calendar" that provides the media with an organization's activities for the year. Press interview techniques show how to respond to needling, false assumptions, and hypothetical questions and how to convey a message through proper body language. Descriptions and functions of a media contact form, media kit, press release, and letters to the editor are included. 8 appendixes
