The Secretary of Health and Human Services appointed a Task Force to develop a departmental strategy to promote the prevention and improved reporting, investigation, and follow-up of elder abuse and neglect.
Abstract
The Task Force recommended a 3-part strategy. The first step would be to develop and fund a national research and data collection strategy under the auspices of the National Institute on Aging with the support of the Administration on Aging and the Health Care Financing Administration. The second step would be to develop and raise a hands-on technical assistance and training program using mechanisms including workshops, regional conferences, agency grant programs, and communications networks. The agencies of the Department of Health and Human Services responsible for elder abuse and neglect would be linked to State and local government authorities, the legal system, provider and consumer groups, and practitioners. The final prong of the strategy would be to develop and promote targeted public education activities including speeches and testimony directed at professional and volunteer groups that administer elder abuse and neglect programs. 1 appendix
