Juvenile detention is defined as the temporary and safe custody of juveniles accused of conduct subject to the jurisdiction of the court who require a restricted environment for their own or the community's protection while pending legal action. Juvenile detention provides a wide range of services that support the juvenile's physical, emotional and social development. Such services minimally include education, recreation, counseling, nutrition, medical and health care, reading, visitation, communication and continuous supervision. Nationwide summaries of juvenile detention facilities are presented in table format, along with date on the number of facilities by State, type, and date opened. Data are also given on budgets and per capita costs for facilities and on the juvenile detention population by sex, race, and age. The bulk of the report contains tables that list juvenile detention facilities by State. Each summary contains information on facility location, personnel, costs, and the juvenile population. The directory is based on a 1991 questionnaire survey of juvenile facilities in which 874 detention centers were identified. The directory also provides information on ACA membership, affiliates, training, projects, and publications. An index to the juvenile detention facilities is included.
