This booklet provides a comparison of State and locally implemented community corrections acts and programs.
Abstract
It lists problems in the correctional systems, and summarizes the impact of crime on sentencing and incarceration, and presents the motivations for adopting community corrections acts. The similarities and differences of State laws are analyzed regarding the concept of community corrections, especially the requirements of State corrections acts. Steps required to implement an act are summarized and cover improvement of administration, services, community support, and funding. Highlights of the results of community corrections legislation are presented to demonstrate their history and benefits. In addition, the dynamic quality of the acts requires revision of legislation and monitoring for outcomes consistent with goals. A listing of the community corrections legislation in each State -- with highlights of the purpose, leadership, organizational structure, and administrative mechanism -- is appended.
