The part-time patrol officer performs the same job as his or her full-time counterpart and thus the same high standards of in-service training, competent supervision, and personnel selection must be implemented in the selection of part-time sworn officers.
Abstract
Once properly selected, the in-service special officer most likely will be found to be highly intelligent and deeply motivated. Other potential advantages of the use of the part-time officer include less susceptibility to burnout and complacency; more life experience, calmness under stress, and seasoned judgment than an entry-level career officer in his or her early 20s; and the availability of a tremendous pool of trained personnel that otherwise would be wasted. If a police department recruits, trains, and teaches then part-time police can become competent, proud professionals who just happen to be on a part-time basis. 1 reference
