Abstract
Specific guidelines identify ways to control and achieve a successful news conference and televised appearance. Additionally, some general guidelines suggest ways to improve all media encounters. These include practicing one's presentation in advance, establishing and maintaining control, defusing volatile questions by rephrasing them in softer and less emotional terms, and telling the truth. Guidelines are included for handling difficult encounters with news media representatives who may misrepresent or interrupt in an attempt to impress the public.
