To cope with the escalating violence in today's schools affecting both pupils and teachers, students have resorted to carrying weapons for protection.
Abstract
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, during a 6-month period between 1988 and 1989, over 400,000 students experienced violent crimes at schools including assault, robbery, and rape; 430,000 students armed themselves for protection. Security systems in schools, including metal detectors, guards, locker searches, restroom monitors, walkie-talkie units, and visitor badges, contribute to the student's fear of danger. Victimized students reported increased fear for future attacks and were more likely to evade areas of high-risk. Weapons are classified as any instrument that can cause injury to an assailant; sharp and pointed objects, such as spiked jewelry, razor blades, knives, and brass knuckles, are frequently used. Handguns are another popular choice with great potential for lethal outcomes from violent encounters. Though security is the main reason why students carry weapons, some feel it is also a form of status.
