This discussion of the history and current status of court management comments on and extends a discussion by Lawson and Howard by focusing on three major themes: (1) justice and liberty as the goals served by court managers, (2) the control and operations of urban trial courts as the stimulus to the development of the court management profession, and (3) seven issues needing future attention.
Abstract
The issues most needing attention in the next 5-10 years are the mounting overloads in State trial courts, the legitimate public demands for improved judicial system accountability and performance, and the continued development of viable alternatives to the adversarial system. The other issues requiring attention include new forms and levels of management oversight and involvement by trial and appellate judges, the impact of changing demographics on courts, the role of new scientific developments in areas such as genetics and genetic engineering, and the use of technology in court processes.
