Because pregnant teenagers and teenage parents are also at risk for a host of physical, emotional, and economic problems, the guide is designed to help staff of school-age parents programs; teachers, school counselors, and nurses; principals and school administrators; other professionals in health care, family planning, and alcohol and drug abuse prevention and treatment; and community agencies who work with pregnant teenagers and their parents. Although the guide discusses parenting skills for pregnant teenagers, it can also be used with teenagers who have chosen adoption for their babies. The information and strategies included in the book are also appropriate for use in programs on alcohol and drug abuse and/or sexuality. The strategies are intended to help pregnant teens develop self-esteem, decisionmaking and other skills, and the support they need to avoid alcohol and other drugs. Strategies to help pregnant teens specifically focus on active listening and communication, the importance of a realistic approach, and the use of positive messages. The guide discusses myths about drugs and pregnancy, pregnancy complications associated with drug use, support for pregnant teenagers to help them avoid alcohol and other drugs, and reasons for avoiding drugs after the baby is born. Information resources are listed, and worksheets are included.
