This article describes the implementation of a crime prevention policy in the Netherlands and its subsequent effects on crime.
Abstract
On the basis of a meta-evaluation of 104 of 200 projects conducted over the 1985-1990 period, it is not possible to estimate the overall effect of the crime prevention policy. However, under some circumstances, crime prevention can be effective: if measures have sufficient intensity, if the crime problem is not too serious, and if the strategy of the prevention is directed at increasing, in the view of potential offenders, the risk of punishment and the efforts needed to commit crime. 8 references
