Data on felony convictions and sentencing for California courts cover the quarter ending June 30, 1991.
Abstract
Statistical tables in this report were obtained from case reports received from superior courts. The data indicate that convictions for crimes against the person were higher in the first and second quarters of 1991 than in the same quarters in 1990. Crimes against property also increased. Felony drug law convictions, which began to decline in the last half of 1990, continued their decline in the first and second quarters of 1991. A table compares the current rate of prison commitments for felonies with the commitment rates over the past few years and at the beginning of determinate sentencing. There is not any apparent significant change in these rates. Another table shows the rates of prison commitments by appellate district, followed by tabular data on the length of determinate prison sentences. There was no significant change in average sentence length from quarter to quarter over the past several years. There were 5 reported death penalties among the 67 first-degree murder convictions sentenced in the quarter ended June 30, 1991. Convictions and sentencing are indicated by offense. 8 tables
