The State of Hawaii has developed an 8-unit curriculum designed to discourage gang membership and prevent gang activity based on the program developed by the city of Paramount, Calif.
Abstract
The program is designed for use with heterogeneous student populations in health or social studies classes and is not directed only to gang members. The program resulted from a cooperative effort of law enforcement and the schools to reinforce in youth the concern that adults have regarding the influences of juvenile gangs. The program also encourages interagency coordination and collaborative efforts between local law enforcement agencies and school districts in reducing juvenile gang involvement and drug abuse. Topics covered include gang attitudes, behaviors, and identity; gang turf and identify; violence and "gateway" drugs; peer pressure and refusal skills; the role of the police; the impact of gang membership on the family; and alternatives and choices. Curriculum outlines, handouts, activities, quizzes, forms, and related materials.
