The 1991 Juvenile Corrections Survey is a 6-page survey that was mailed to 641 juvenile correctional facilities of all types throughout the United States. The survey was mailed on October 1, 1991, and 284 responded by December 7, 1991. The respondents represented 45 States and the District of Columbia. One table lists the 12 types of facilities that responded along with frequency and percentage distribution by type of facility. Another table presents the averages (mean values) by type of juvenile correctional facility for daily cost, recidivism, length of stay, and security level. Tables with averages (mean values) of selected characteristics by type of facility address gang training, race conflict, exercise gym, behavior modification, overcrowding, certification, sex education, drug rehabilitation, job skills, and treatment department. Another table shows the mean percentage of service programs of various types, followed by data on type of facility by mean population (male and female) and estimated gang membership. Other tables contain data on comparison by facility with ratings of correctional goals and type of facility by average number of full-time female and male staff as well as estimates of the percentage of habitual offenders. 4 references
