This report, which briefly describes a number of effective educational programs in correctional settings, is being distributed to correctional education professionals and PLUS task forces for use as a resource in the development of such programs in facilities in their own areas.
Abstract
The first section describes 10 juvenile correctional education programs. The programs described range from small to large. The facilities involved are typically either detention centers where the incarceration period is less than 1 year, or institutions where inmates are imprisoned for much longer. The average age of students is approximately 15. Each program is profiled including the curriculum, type of facility, students served annually, average student age, staff, and contact person. A second section profiles nine local detention/community correctional education programs. The programs described encompass those housed in county jails, detention centers, community corrections facilities, community-based volunteer literacy programs, and private nonprofit education programs. Programs range from small county jails to large urban detention centers. The third section describes 11 prison education programs. The program described represents adult programs at the minimum-security and maximum-security levels; the programs are medium to large.
