Basic elements needed to develop a successful multi-jurisdictional team are shared communication and intelligence, mutual respect among jurisdictions of all sizes, an effective program for asset seizure and forfeiture, and experienced supervisors and law enforcement personnel. Other crucial elements include the involvement of prosecutors and frequent meetings of supervisors and personnel. Although the potential for information leaks exists in multi-jurisdictional task forces, such leaks are uncommon and are generally prevented by restricting certain information to appropriate persons. The experience of the Northeastern metropolitan Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Enforcement Group, which involves the Chicago Police Department and several smaller task forces from nearby counties, shows how effective these task forces can be.
