The National HIV/AIDS in Prisons Information Clearing House (NAIPIC), an initiative of the New South Wales Department of Corrective Services, was funded as an 18-month project from May 1990 to November 1991.
Abstract
NAIPIC aimed to establish a cohesive national work to meet the HIV/AIDS information needs of staff throughout the prison system in Australia. This national network collected, reviewed, updated, and distributed HIV/AIDS information relevant to prisons. Goals in the first phase of NAIPIC included establishing a communication network between all states and territories, reviewing current and future HIV/AIDS information needs, collating HIV/AIDS research and education strategies for the prison system, collecting and distributing samples of resource materials, producing a list of HIV/AIDS resources relevant to prisons, linking NAIPIC with other community-based clearinghouses, and developing recommendations for future directions and activities. Goals in the second phase of NAIPIC involved updating and publishing clearinghouse documents, collaborating with the National Center in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research to develop strategies for improving the collection of epidemiological information on HIV infection in prisons, and producing background papers and analyses on issues related to HIV in prisons. HIV/AIDS citations and abstracts are grouped in 10 sections: economic issues, education and training, industrial issues, legal issues, medical issues (testing), medical management, offender supervision, policy, psychosocial issues, and research. NAIPIC contact persons and resource centers are listed, and author and title indexes to the NAIPIC data base are provided.
