This paper describes a Texas residential treatment program for juvenile sex offenders that uses a diverse and eclectic combination of modalities.
Abstract
Data for this study were obtained primarily through a combination of participant observation, archival analysis, and interview methods. The program uses several fundamental elements in its treatment design. Even though the therapists use their own styles and techniques, the program requires that several basic components be present in any modality approach. Group therapy is the benchmark of the therapeutic design of the program. These sessions are used as a tool for group-generated behavior modification through peer influence as well as a forum for dispute resolution, behavioral management, and various treatment approaches. Journal writing is another element of the treatment. Each youth maintains a personal journal in which daily entries are made for activities, thoughts, and behavior. The journal also provides a chronology of the youth's individual experiences and enables others to gain insight into the youth's behavior. Family networking is another fundamental component of the program that enables the youth to interact with and involve their families in treatment. Social skills training is an important modification strategy used to address social and interpersonal-behavioral deficiencies. Sex education is intended to bring participants to an appropriate understanding of intimacy, consent, and normal sexual relations. Although the therapeutic milieu relies primarily on group therapy, individual interaction between the offender and the therapist is especially important when treating youthful offenders.
