The 1991 annual report of the Maryland State Police provides data on calls for service, traffic arrests and fatalities, and driving while intoxicated arrests and contains information on the crime laboratory, training, motorcycle units, firearms registration, criminal investigations, drug interdiction and diversion, the drug task force, marijuana eradication, and police volunteer support.
Abstract
During 1991, police personnel responded to 394,407 calls for service that included 126,656 Part I and Part II criminal offenses, 168,547 traffic-related calls, and 99,204 miscellaneous incidents. Maryland traffic fatalities for 1991 totaled 712, continuing the 4-year decline. Maryland troopers were responsible for 43.3 percent of the 31,712 driving while intoxicated arrests by all Maryland police agencies. The Berlin Regional Controlled Dangerous Substance Laboratory became operational in 1991. The seven motorcycle units investigated 446 accidents, assisted 1,809 disabled motorists, cleared 698 blocked lanes, and issued 2,898 citations or warnings. In 1991, the Licensing Division processed 28,163 applications to purchase firearms; of those, 26,847 were approved, including 1,146 assault weapons. The State Drug Task Force investigated 1,908 cases and made 1,409 arrests. The marijuana eradication program resulted in the eradication of 11,210 domestically-cultivated plants. Covert drug interdiction efforts resulted in 60 drug-related arrests. The Drug Diversion Unit coordinated investigations that resulted in 36 arrests of physicians, pharmacists, and a veterinarian.
