This review of software theft addresses the availability of counterfeit multi-game cartridges, losses, costs to the public, organized efforts to combat the piracy, court battles for copyrights, licensing, the packaging of software, trademarks, exposure to criminal liabilities, and penalties in Canada and the United States.
Abstract
All around the world efforts of the International Anti- counterfeiting Coalition (IACC) are directed to attacking every aspect of counterfeiting and piracy. This involves efforts to lobby for and pass new legislation and directives and regulations to stop illegal modern product pirateers. The IACC supports the imposition of heavy fines, harsh jail sentences, and confiscation of pirated goods. A notable major success in the United States is passage of the 1984 Anti-Counterfeiting Law which adds new criminal and civil sanctions. Canadian legislation permits civil remedies to be transacted against those who violate copyright. 8 footnotes
