The Big Brothers/Big Sisters of New York City surveyed 38 organizations that aid New York City youth to compile this list of programs that have proven successful in stopping youthful violence. Each organization described the program they would expand or implement if its current budget were doubled.
Abstract
Some of the organizations surveyed included the American Friends Service Committee, Children's Aid Society, Family Consultation Service, New York City Outward Bound Center, New York City Job and Career Center, Victim Services, Suicide Prevention Resources, and YMCA of Greater New York. The programs listed, by frequency in which they were mentioned, included: (1) multiservice community centers; (2) job counseling and youth employment; (3) one-on-one role models; (4) non-violence and conflict resolution programs; (5) racial awareness programs; (6) visual arts, music, and theater programs; (7) self-esteem programs; (8) programs dealing with peer pressure; (9) tutoring and alternative classes; (10) family support; (11) sports; (12) suicide prevention; (13) court intervention; and (14) transitional living arrangements.
