This report describes the programs and initiatives of the National Institute for Dispute Resolution (NIDR) for 1992-93.
Abstract
NIDR was founded in 1982 to encourage the growth and development of dispute resolution. It has become a leader in the movement that is changing the way Americans think about and resolve disputes and is the only grant-maker devoted solely to advancing dispute resolution. In its first 9 years, NIDR has awarded just over $10 million in grants and contracts and leveraged an additional $10 million in matching funds. As funder, advisor, and advocate, NIDR works to enhance the understanding, acceptance, and development of many conflict-resolution techniques, including mediation, arbitration, and negotiation. NIDR has substantially expanded the use of these techniques, as it has made them available to individuals and institutions throughout the Nation. Currently, NIDR's programs focus on the expansion of the uses of dispute resolution in public policy, the courts, higher and professional education, primary and secondary schools, local communities, and international relations. NIDR's work in each of these areas is described in this report.
