Between 1976 and 1989, Alaska has sharply reduced the number of violations of the Federal requirement that juveniles in adult facilities be separated from adults by sight and sound. However, achieving full compliance with this and other requirements will remain extremely difficult in Alaska due to weather and vast distances. At the end of 1989, the number of female inmates reached a record of 40,556, although females represent only 5.7 percent of the total prison population. Alaska's homicide rate has been below the national average in 1988, 1989, and 1990. In addition, the homicide statistics do not seem to correlate positively with claims of increasing drug abuse in Alaska. Figures and tables
