This book recounts the 30-year career of a New York City police detective who rose through the ranks to command a special unit dedicated to solving Mafia murders.
Abstract
Under the guidance of Detective Sergeant Joseph Coffey, the special unit became known as the Coffey gang. The unit solved more than 80 mob hits and sent hundreds of mobsters to prison. Coffey personally arrested several of the leading Mafia figures in the United States, including Paul Castellano and John Gotti. The book covers Coffey's career, from his days as a rookie plainclothes police officer when he followed a mobster's trail from New York City's Little Italy to the Vatican, to his eventual command of the Coffey gang. The book describes the inner workings of organized criminals, the extent of organized crime in New York City, and investigatory procedures used by the New York City Police Department. Photographs
