This chapter introduces the subsequent chapters in this monograph on drug abuse prevention intervention research. The monograph aims to examine the state-of-the-art of drug abuse prevention intervention research methodology, recommend refinements of current approaches, and develop an agenda for future research applications.
Abstract
The introductory section of the volume contains an overview of drug abuse prevention research and related issues as well as a review of drug trends among senior high school students in the U.S. The second section, on documenting the prevention intervention, consists of chapters which examine the theoretical bases of prevention intervention programs, the parameters for defining an intervention and the intended target audience, and issues related to program implementation. The third section of the monograph focuses on measuring the efficacy of prevention interventions. The various authors review experimental and quasi-experimental research designs, modeling and measurement issues related to evaluating the effects of prevention interventions, and outcome measures used in drug abuse prevention intervention research. The final two sections explore issues related to assessing effectiveness and developing consensus; some specific areas covered here include replication, technology transfer, attrition, and the validity of self-report data. 14 references
