The offenses included in this study include violent assault, sexual offenses, robbery, burglary, theft and handling stolen goods, vehicle crimes, fraud and forgery, and criminal damage. During the 12-month reporting period, police recorded 5.5 million notifiable offenses, an increase of 11 percent over the previous year. Of these crimes, 94 percent were property offenses while 5 percent were violent crimes. Violent crime increased by 9 percent; personal assaults were up by 7 percent, while there was a 24-percent rise in robberies. Vehicle crimes rose 7 percent.
