This report presents statistics on notifiable offenses reported to English and Welsh police agencies between July 1991 and June 1992; the figures are compared to those from the previous year and trends since 1981 are described.
Abstract
The offenses included in this study include violent assault, sexual offenses, robbery, burglary, theft and handling stolen goods, vehicle crimes, fraud and forgery, and criminal damage. During the 12-month reporting period, police recorded 5.5 million notifiable offenses, an increase of 11 percent over the previous year. Of these crimes, 94 percent were property offenses while 5 percent were violent crimes. Violent crime increased by 9 percent; personal assaults were up by 7 percent, while there was a 24-percent rise in robberies. Vehicle crimes rose 7 percent. Police forces in all reporting areas, with the exception of Bedfordshire and the City of London, recorded higher rates of crime. 4 tables, 8 figures, and 6 notes
