The 1992 survey was part of an ongoing sex offender assessment and treatment project of the Safer Society Program. The first questionnaire identified specialized services treating sex offenders by State, the number of services using specific treatment methods, and trends and selected behavioral modalities in treatment orientation. The second questionnaire identified and ranked by greatest use current treatment models, methods, and modalities. Findings indicated that, despite continuous growth in juvenile and adult sex offender treatment programs, services remained unevenly distributed geographically. The ratio of community- based outpatient to residential treatment settings was relatively constant for both juvenile and adult services. Peer groups continued to be the preferred juvenile and adult method of treating sex offenders. Newer treatment methods in use since 1990 included penile plethysmography, aversive conditioning, and Depo-Provera. Data are provided on juvenile and adult sex offender programs and treatment providers by State and setting and according to selected treatment methods. Information is also given on therapeutic intervention models and modalities in 735 juvenile and 726 adult sex offender treatment programs.
