The center is the product of a $100,000 grant from the National Institute of Corrections and is one of a small but growing number of such centers built on the grounds of correctional sites. The SCDC determined that increasing numbers of corrections employees come from single-parent households or from households in which both parents work and that parents are more productive and miss fewer days of work when they are assured of their children's well-being. Correctional employees' children are given first consideration for enrollment at the center. Children of employees at other corrections-related agencies are considered if space permits. The center is designed to accommodate 41 children between 6 weeks and 5 years of age. It includes a small staff lounge, an office, a kitchen, and three classrooms. The staff includes a director and six teachers who are licensed according to State law requirements. Employees pay a competitive rate for day care, $55 per week for toddlers between 6 weeks and 2 years of age and $50 for children between 2 and 5 years. Breakfast, lunch, and two snacks are served daily at the center, and daily activities include arts and crafts, music, dramatic plays, puzzles and toys, and outside play.
