This statistical analysis profiles crime trends based upon the voluntary submission of data from participating law enforcement agencies within the State. A 5-year (1984-88) comparison of index offenses in New Hampshire is followed by data on crime trends for 1988 compared to 1987. A 1988 "crime clock" indicates how often various crimes are committed in New Hampshire. Statistics are provided for the offenses of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, arson, and domestic assault. Crime and crime rates are presented by county; and arrest data cover arrest totals, juvenile arrests, and adult arrests. The percentage of serious crimes reported for 1988 rose only 0.7 percent over 1987. This is primarily due to an increase in property crime. Most categories of violent crime, including murder, rape, and robbery, decreased over the previous year. Only aggravated assault increased. Arson offenses showed a significant increase of more than 20 percent. Drug-related arrests increased 5.4 percent over the last year. This is most likely due to enhanced enforcement efforts that have targeted drug-related crimes. Cocaine and marijuana continue to be the drugs that account for the majority of the reported offenses.
