Under the 1989 Prevention of Terrorism Act, 40 people were detained in Great Britain in the third quarter of 1992; and five of them were either charged with an offense, deported, removed, or excluded.
Abstract
Thirty-three of the detentions were in connection with Northern Irish terrorism, and seven were in connection with international terrorism. At the end of the third quarter, 82 persons remained subject to an exclusion order, 13 fewer than 12 months earlier. In addition, 67 persons were interrogated for more than 1 hour, but were not detained. The law allows the police to arrest suspected terrorists and detain them for 48 hours on their own authority. They also have the power to carry out security checks on travelers entering or leaving Great Britain, Northern Ireland, or the United Kingdom. In addition, persons involved in terrorism connected with the affairs of Northern Ireland may be excluded from Great Britain, Northern Ireland, or the United Kingdom. Tables
