Information from a census of New Zealand inmates conducted on November 14, 1991 addresses the characteristics of sentenced inmates and remand inmates, as well as fine defaulters imprisoned.
Abstract
On the date of the census, all prisons had less than the maximum manageable number of inmates. Information on remand inmates includes age, ethnicity, educational level, and major offense. There were 411 remand prisoners, with 55 percent detained for violent offenses and 25 percent for property offenses. Most had at least six convictions, and 71 percent had at least one conviction for a violent offense. There were 27 fine defaulters in prison; 19 were serving a sentence of 3 months or less. Information on sentenced inmates addresses age and ethnicity, sentence length, previous terms in custody, proportion of time spent in prison since the age of 16, the offense that led to the current sentence, offending history, traffic offenders, classification status, gang membership and affiliation, psychological and psychiatric treatment, medication, dependent children, work parole, home leave, and programs. Information is also provided on inmate employment, protective custody, inmates to be deported at the end of their sentence, young offenders, and earnings and other cash on release. There were 131 female and 3,663 males under sentence in prison at the time of the census. Prison censuses for 1987, 1989, and 1991 are compared. 57 tables and 6 appendixes with supplementary data
