A simplified method for calculating the Bayesian likelihood ratio for a case where two DNA single locus profiles are to be compared is described; the method's efficiency is demonstrated through the results of experiments which have been carried out on casework data.
Abstract
The article presents the method by discussing the basic theory of Bayesian analysis and concentrating on principles with a simple numerical example. The second section, on advanced theory, goes into more mathematical detail. While this likelihood ratio calculation lacks the mathematical rigor of other analyses and makes a series of independent assumptions, its simplicity has enabled large-scale computer experimentation. The calculation is being built into a user- friendly computer program for use in general crime investigations. The program will also be adapted to deal with paternity suits and with DNA mixtures, such as those encountered in multiple rape cases. 7 tables, 5 figures, and 10 references
