This volume presents a table of indexes for construction costs in major cities throughout the United States, for use in estimating the costs of constructing any correctional facility shown in the NIJ National Directory of Corrections Construction.
Abstract
That directory lists the date and cost of construction of each correctional institution at a particular location. Readers can use the cost index table in the present volume to estimate what it would cost to construct a particular facility in their own geographic region. The cost indexes are listed in alphabetical order by State and are based on a 69-city national average, with a 1978 base of 100. Estimators should use the index factors for the cities closest to the geographic areas being compared or in which the new facility will be constructed. Another approach is to obtain an NIJ Construction Information Exchange Facility Data Base Search printout that shows the date and cost of construction for a jail or prison being considered for another jurisdiction. In either case, a detailed budget estimate that includes appropriate contingencies and considers the specific site and program should also be prepared. Table, three examples demonstrating the use of the cost indexes, list of construction documents available from NCJRS, and information about NIJ's Construction Information Exchange
