The conference was organized by Bulgaria's Council for Criminological Research. Conference participants included judges, prosecutors, investigators, police officers, representatives of agencies involved in crime prevention and control, and scientists. A U.S. professor of criminology and advisor to the United Nations Secretary General was a special conference guest. Conference presentations examined the increase in organized crime in Bulgaria, methodological problems in the criminological study of organized crime, social and economic problems associated with organized crime, organized criminal groups, smuggling of stolen cars, drug smuggling, terrorism, ways of controlling organized crime, and the need for international cooperation.
