The guidelines aim to reduce the fear of crime, increase awareness of crime prevention, reduce opportunities for crime, and help community groups design and operate programs to meet their specific needs. They also aim to show how these programs can operate effectively to improve the quality of life for individuals, families, and neighborhoods and to encourage design approaches that will aid crime prevention in future communities. The text explains situational crime prevention; crime prevention through environmental design; and social defense through crisis intervention, alternative dispute resolution, and youth development and other forms of primary prevention. It outlines the advantages of community-based programs and the steps involved planning and developing a program. Specific programs are also described, including support groups, cooperative efforts with the police, personal security measures, domestic assault prevention, and efforts to inform immigrants about Australian law and institutions and help them become involved in organized crime.
