Another major focus of OJP is Operation Weed and Seed, a strategy based on the premise that law enforcement, communities, government, and the private sector must cooperate to drive crime out of neighborhoods and to create environments in which crime cannot flourish. The four components of the strategy include weeding out violent offenders by integrating the efforts of Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies; implementing community policing programs in each targeted site; organizing a neighborhood revitalization steering committee; and revitalizing areas through economic development. OJP has also been involved in efforts to prevent and suppress illegal gang activity, to promote community policing, to encourage crime and drug prevention programs, and to implement a criminal history record improvement programs. OJP provides leadership, funding, and training to improve victim services; supports the Drug Use Forecasting program; tests and evaluates a range of intermediate sanctions; assists State and local agencies financially; and supports a wide variety of training and technical assistance programs.
